Basic Tune-up Specs for a 1991-94 Mercury Capri and XR2 Turbo

Despite the large technician manuals produced by Ford for the 1991-94 Mercury Capri and XR2, finding the critical basic tune-up specs can be a chore because they are buried in the manuals. As far as I know, Chilton or Haynes never did a DIY book for the 91-94 Capri, they did do one for the 1980s models.

1991-94 Capri Tune Up Specs:

IDLE:

All models - 800-900 rpm

A Capri's idle is controlled by the on board computer to some extent, high idle may be caused by a wide variety of issues, vacuum leaks are prime, as are a stuck throttle. You can also manually adjust the idle after the engine has been running for 10-15 min by a single recessed screw on top, near the throttle cable. To reduce the idle, loosen the screw (counter clockwise) until the idle is at spec. Do not make the adjustment when the engine is cold.

TIMING

XR2 Turbo: 12 deg. BTDC

Non-Turbo: 2 deg. BTDC

SPARK PLUGS:

Gap: .039 - .043 ( all models)

FIRING ORDER:

Cyl. 1 - 3 - 4 - 2

WHEEL:

The 14x5-1/2 wheel (both steel and geometric alloy) used a P185/60R14 tire. The 15x6 three-spoke alloy wheel used a P195/50HR15 tire.

The 14x6 five-spoke alloy wheel used a P185/60R14 tire. the 15x6 seven-spoke alloy wheel used a P195/50R15 tire.
